There is no-one like Shri. Born and brought up in down town Bombay, Shri has consistently stood out as an anomaly in a city famous for its musical commercialism and film industry. Raised as a classical tabla player, Shri turned tradition on its head by developing a more groove orientated playing style in his early teens. In a context where playing jazz was thought of as painting by numbers, Shri was checking out luminaries such as McLaughin, Pastorias and Zawinal as well as the Indian classical giants such as Hariprasad Charasia and Zakir Hussain.

As time progressed, Shri adapted his innovative feel for percussion to other instruments, notably the bamboo flute and his self-made fretless bass. Using his mind numbing tabla techniques, he quickly developed a totally unique style of slapping and coercing the most haunting sounds from a bass that combined the visual gravitas of a sitar with the reverberant voice of a sarangi.

His diverse experiences are absorbed in his compositions, rolling drum'n'bass, sublime filmic trances and funky grooves which travel the length and breadth of deepest India to deepest India to deepest South London. Truly new Asian music.
